What the ad says
"Reporting to the CFO, you will lead the transformation of our procurement function, delivering significant cost savings while building strategic supplier partnerships and developing a high-performing team."
The honest read
What they're probably not telling you
"Transformation"
Something is broken. Possibly the team, possibly the data, possibly the last Head of Procurement's relationship with the ELT. Find out which before you sign.
"Developing a high-performing team"
Translation: the team you're inheriting is not currently high-performing, and you may not have budget to change its composition. Ask directly.
Questions to ask
Ask the recruiter first
- Why did the last person leave, and how long were they in the seat?
- Is the savings target already set, and who set it?
Then ask the hiring manager
- What decision rights does this role actually hold: contract sign-off limits, supplier selection, team hiring?
- Show me the last board paper procurement produced. Who wrote it and did the board act on it?
- If I find the savings target was set before the spend was understood, what happens to the target?
Reporting to the CFO is the single most important line in this ad, and it's genuinely good news. It means procurement has a seat at the table where money decisions get made, not buried under a COO's operations function three layers from the P&L.
"Transformation" plus "significant cost savings" in the same sentence tells you the function is currently underperforming and the board knows it. That's an opportunity if you've done this before, and a trap if you haven't. The first 90 days will define whether you get the mandate or become the person blamed for the number.
